Evaluation And Reflection

15 October 2018 - Mid-Project evaluation

Human evolution.jpg

Its been 6 weeks since the course started and I was give the London Remix Project. I believe that I have improved a lot since I first started the course as I had very little knowledge on how to use softwares like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Animator and Adobe Illustrator and programs like Maya for 3D modelling and animation. I think I have gained lot of knowledge from the tutorials our tutors gave us, so that gives me some confidence to do things that before I considered complicated, and even though I know that there is lot more to learn, I thing that I progressed a lot.

Before I started this course I only practised traditional drawing with pencil, so i think of myself as a quite good drawer and I believe that this skill has been very helpful trough out the course until this point as it has given me some kind of foundation to have while making digital works.

I think that if I had to start all over again, I thing that I think I would write more about what I have learned each day and discuss and analyse my works and what tools or techniques I used to achieve this result on this wix website. I think that this is very useful as It saves information that I may forget for the future, where I may need it, and i shows where I've gone wrong.

Sometimes I try to use the new learned tools to create something that is off topic but I really want to try and make at that moment. I consider that both a positivity and negativity, as it helps me find a way out of a problem, when things get to complicated, however on the other hand sometimes getting off topic is pulling me behind the entire class and this has happened many times before no only in school and college but at home or anywhere where I gain new information. I think that right now I should concentrate more on the task that has been given to me and not rush the time.

I think I spend more time on rather 2D than 3D works, as the process of making 2D works reminds me more of the traditional drawing so I feel more comfortable with it. I enjoy 3D modeling but I find it little different from what i'm used to.

I personally think I used more Secondary Sources than Primary as they where more accessible and more appropriate than Primary Sources. I learned lots of needed skills to make my poster, which were gained by workshops from my tutors and my own research (youtube, pinterest, behance and ect.).

My strengths in research I consider to be that I can take useful information from any source even if it does not touch the subject I research for. Also I like to make a short but useful research as I like to spend more time on practical as I may get around a problem so I would like have enough time to solve it.

I can make my research more reliable I will have to do some more research on similar topics. That will help me as, if most sources agree on the same topic that means in should be true.

For my next research I think I will spend more time on it and look at variety of sources.

The foundation for idea for my poster came from the the Natural History Museum. I have been there few times and I loved it a lot so I decide to make my poster based on an exhibit from the museum. There were lot exhibits to choose from, but I wanted to choose one of the most iconic ones, ones that people recognize without reading the text on the poster.

I think that the escalator sphere is quite iconic think in the Natural History Museum, even thought it is not an exhibit so I think that this side of my poster works quite well as it is very recognizable.

Regarding the research, I had some in my own time but mainly to learn skills that would help me with making my poster, like making lava. I personally had very little research on the Natural History Museum and research that will support my idea. At the process of making I did not find it necessary, but now when I start to think about it I think that research on the museum would have introduced me more ideas than those I had to begin with.

For my next project I would research more on the theme or place linked to my idea, so I can have range of ideas to choose from. In addition having lots of different ideas always made me fell comfortable while doing work.

Before I started this course I had very little knowledge about the inner processes of the softwares I am using currently, but now it seems so much easier than I imagined, especially the After Effects and the 3D parts. While I was working in photoshop I learned about the 'blur' tool, that was very useful when I was drawing the lava, as it blended the birther and the darker shades to make smooth surface. Also in Maya I learned that there was a sections of complex models, like cogs, that could be used instead of being made using simple objects like spheres and cubes. Unfortunately I had very little time experimenting with the softwares' options due to feeling that I was staying behind with my project.

I like the final outcome of my poster so some extend. For example I like that the escalator worked so well with the cosmic background. Together they look like explosions of bright colours, which is something I looked for while I was doing my project. However I don't like the fact that some of my original ideas did not make it into the final poster, even-thought it looks quite nice as it is now. Also I planed to make the stars sparkle from time to time and not explode, but I still like how it looks. For the next project I plan to allow my self more time to think about my ideas and their development.

For this project I only used two softwares - Photoshop and After Effects. The main reason I used Photoshop is because I feel more comfortable and more familiar with it, than lets say Adobe Illustrator. I understand that there are some useful tools in Illustrator that would have made the process of making much quicker, but as I said I felt much more comfortable with Photoshop. As for the animation I choose After Effects over Adobe Animation because there were more options there, besides I needed to add more effects than animation.

In addition I only worked on 2D. I did enjoy working in 2D, but I feel like I want to experiment more on 3D as it looks pretty exiting, so as my goal for the next project is to practice more on 3D and apply it to whatever I will be doing.

When I am looking at my Wix website pages I feel like at the beginning I was little lost at what I had to do, I did not know what to write and how to describe what I was doing, and I believe that this was due to everything being quite new. Because of My confusion at the beginning I have some things missing especially on the practical skills page, context and research page. But the further I go I feel like my written work gets better and in more detail as now I feel more confident at what I am doing. There are lots of things I should add but I am running out of time so now I plan to just concentrate on the written work I have to do and not what I already missed, however if I happen to have some time before the deadline.

In conclusion, for the next project I plan to improve few things regarding the way I work. One, I will spend more time on research and planning my ideas and actions as I feel that this is what lacked. Also in the future I want to spend more on the website describing in more detail the processes I go through.
