Evaluation & reflection

weeks 1 & 2

For the first and the second week we were mainly working on the Context and the Research page, looking for information and inspiration for the idea. We were given question to answer to help us to reflect on what we are capable of and based on that we could decide what would be the best thing to make.

As for the Research page I looked at things that inspire me and compared different styles. This was very helpful as it supplied me with information that I may need when I start production and also gave me some ideas on what to do. I think that I still have some more research to do on other character design styles from cartoons.

I added the production schedule table on the Planning and production page, which shows how I plan the process will go. I will try to follow it as much as can. I think I may add more details to the schedule with time, but for now this is as much I

Week 3

I was doing some sketches and was finishing the the Human Anatomy tutorial research. I included lots of details and explained what I learned from the tutorials, I am sure that there was much more to take from both videos, than I did, but I only paid attention to what I considered the most important. Even if another problem regarding the human anatomy I can always go back to the tutorial.

 Also we had a workshop on selecting and masking. I find the technique quite useful and I may use it when we finally put the 2 bits of the project together. But I think I would not use it before that point.

I feel like I am a little behind in my schedule but I believe I will catch up, but it still makes me little worried.

Week 4

I did not follow the production schedule for this week, but instead I spent more time more research, planning and sketching, so I can be completely ready for production. I think that will help me to be more prepared when I start working on the final outcome and avoid many delays during the production. I believe that won't effect my schedule a lot as I will have just enough time to finish the practical side of the project and do the final evaluation.

Week 5 04/02/2019

This week I started with the production after I was done with all the research and context. On Monday I worked on the first character and on Tuesday I worked on the second. I put some evidence of the process on the planning and production page. I put some photos of the sketches I did in my sketchbook and then used as templates. Along side the sketches I have the work I did digitally.

Week 6 11/02/2019

This week I was finishing up the colouring and shading. At the end of the week I was pretty much done, there where only little details I have to finish I then I can import my work in After effects where me and my friend can start working on the 3D part of the project. We agreed that we will be doing that over half term, and since none of us has the resources needed we decided that we will do that at college as our tutors said that they will be at college on Thursday and Friday during the 7th week.

I mainly worked on the Planning & Production page and a little on the Problem solving one. There are some Images that I need to add link to. Also I need to check some of the pages for some missing information I need to add. During the few weeks I was working on the production I had very little time to work on the website so I feel like I should do some more written work especially on the Evaluation & Reflection page as I feel like some of my evaluations are very weak and look more like I am discussing what I have done for the day rather than evaluating.

Week 7 (21 and 22 of February 2019)

The 7th week is a half term but me and my friend came to college as we had had things in photoshop to finish before moving on to after effects. The only days we could come come during half-term were Thursday and Friday, so we had to finish the photoshop work and the presentation for that time, so we can be in time with the production schedule. We finished everything on time which left me we just enough time to do the Final Evaluation, and tidy up the website.

My aims for this week were to finish working on photoshop and the practical side of the project in general. I did finish the practical side by the end of this week, and incase something comes up I will have enough time to change it. If I am done with the final evaluation before the deadline I plan to experiment a little in Adobe Animate with my photoshop files.

I am happy with my practical work as I can see improvement in my techniques or working including time and quality compared to the last project. Now I feel much more comfortable with photoshop than during the previous project, which made things much easier for meed and increased the speed of the process, and the same goes to after effects.

Week 8 25/02/19 (Deadline week)

My goals for this week are:

  • To finish final evaluation;

  • To review all pages and add missing information.

Final Evaluation

When we started this project, after the Christmas holidays, I was very happy that I had the freedom to do pretty much what I wanted. And when I heard we will be doing things on concept art I got even more exited. In the beginning I was not sure what path to take regarding the specialism and the theme. On the top of that we had very little time to complete the project (8 weeks). I felt like I won't have time to experiment which made me panic a little and made me choose the 2D side, as I kept mentioning a lot in my discussions, that I feel more comfortable with photoshop. When I look back at the beginning of the project I wish I waited a little and planned what I was going to do in more details, instead of panicking and making a fast choice. Of course I am happy with the outcome of this project, as I learned and developed my drawing and shading skills, and also I did what I enjoyed the most and was best at - characters and concept art. I am very happy with how the final piece turned out but I think I could have been more creative with the different medias that are available to us.

As I mentioned earlier that I am very happy with the outcome of this project. Compared to the previous project I had knowledge of the resources that were available to us, which meant I could choose one or combine few together. Also, based on the final evaluation I did for the London Remix project, I knew what I had to work on and what to pay attention on for this project so in a way I knew what I had to do in this project in the technical side. In addition I am also so happy with the website and compared with London Remix the pages are much better organised, all the practicals we did during the project are on the Practical Skills page, the proposal describes what I want to make much better than the London remix one I did as as well as description it also includes example variations and inspirations that fuelled my idea.

One of the most important deferences between this project and the previous one is that in this one I worked with a partner. In the beginning we weren't sure how should we divide the work between us but we still wanted to work together as we saw many benefits in team work:

  • we can create a complex piece, won't need extra time as we can separate wore among us;

  • we can concentrate on a single bit of the project without worrying for the rest, thus the final work will result in better quality;

  • receiving feedback from your partner regarding your work;

  • can help with team projects after the end of the course, rather we decide to move to higher education or employment.

There are also negative aspects of team work such as;

  • struggles with the division of the work;

  • opposing opinions that can cause minor conflicts and delay the process.

I really enjoyed working as a group and will be very happy to do it again in the future, in order to achieve better results.

I think that, in a way, the research I did determined the way the piece looks at the end of the project. Right from the beginning of the research I started looking at concept art works for inspiration and source of ideas. I have been a fan of concept are pieces for long time and I was always fascinated by the imagination behind them and the their realism, so that effected my art style a lot, as I like to do drawings that are very close to photographic realism but also cartoonish. The rest of the researches I did was to support my work. I personally think all the research I did was very helpful to the process. I think I fulfilled my goal from the London Remix final evaluation to spend more time on research and planning, which resulted in smoother process and better outcome, as I already had set targets to work on. I think next time I make a research for I could look at some 3D works as well as 2D. I think that will give me more design ides and will make me be braver when deciding what specialism to choose.

Me and my partner have planned almost all of the major details before moving on to production. We divided the work, decided the theme of the work, made a rough sketch of the final thing as a whole, and then used it as a guide. My friend that did the background used the sketch to draw the outlines of her work. However, when we started planning for the presentation we were not completely sure what software to use as we could choose between Maya and After Effects. We decided to leave the 3D solution for that period as we had to start the production. We still had discussions regarding the presentation and what software we should rather use while doing the rest. At the end we decided to use Adobe After Effects for the presentation, as we had more experience with the software as we both worked with it during the last project, also we thought that it will be more comfortable to use softwares that come from the same company and creators as both photoshop and AE both come from Adobe. I think we made the right choice by using AE as it had all the necessary tools and effects. Also I think it was easier to navigate trough AE, at least for me and my partner. I found it very comfortable to have the layers on a side automatically, unlike Maya. In addition we already knew how to render in After Effects, so we decided that it will be best to choose AE for the sake of the time.

I think that compared the last project, in this one my Wix pages have less things written as the project was short so there was not much to write about. For example the practical skills page has a lot less content but I think that is just enough for this project. I think that I should have added some screenshots from the production but I was not sure if that was necessary because there was not much that I practised or tried, which is something I am concerned about.

I mostly used the skills I already had or gained from the last project, and only learned very little skills from this project. I was a bit concerned and pushed away from experimenting a lot due to the short time we had to complete this project. I believe this is one of my weaknesses that pull me away for better results. When I look back at the project I think about how many things I could experiment with, but I stressed out and went with what I was comfortable with. I am still very happy with what me and my partner did but I feel like the outcome could be much better than what I ended up with. I feel like I limited myself in a way, and didn't stop for a little while to think what I could improve in what I was doing at that moment. For example I could look at videos liked, in some way, to my idea and look at the techniques, resources and the materials they used and try and apply the to my idea and see if it works. I believe that is one of the reasons why my problem solving page is quite weak - I only did what I already could, so I didn't come around lots of problems.

However, I also think that what I did for this project was beneficial for my drawing skills, as I did shading with colours very rarely before. Looking at colouring reference images from cartoons helped me to understand and learn more about colouring and shading. However I think I should have researched and put some more evidence and references so I could have a range of options to choose from.

When I look at my wix pages I find some weaknesses in my written work, for example I sometimes struggle to explain the images that I have put as evidence on a specific page especially in the practical skills page. Another thing I noticed sometimes leads me to problems in the future is that I sometimes fail to show evidence of a technique I used or a skill I learned and applied to my work. I remember what I have done or learned but I don't think it is necessary to write about it or explain it in a physical for format, because I see them as a minor thing and I just want to continue with my work. This two problems the pile on each other, but since they have to be done I finish them at the last moment which does not allow me time to review my work properly before the deadline. I think in the next project I should pay close attention on these problems as they can make gaps in my written work.

I like how the outcome of the project turned out, but as I mentioned earlier I think I could have been more creative. However I am happy that I made what I enjoy the most. One of my favourite parts of the production was the sketching and the planning of the character and how he looked as a child and then as an adult, because I like designing and drawing fantasy things, including backgrounds and creatures. Now when I write and discuss about it I think we could have added a mythical creature to the entire image, maybe somewhere in the background, but we had very little time until the deadline and on the top of that I am limited with materials at home so there was very little I could in my own free time. I stayed a bit longer for few days and came in on free days. I enjoyed colouring the characters in the beginning but then it became very frustrating as I had to do almost everything 3 times, and it took very long to fix the edges of the outlines and clear up anything that was going beyond then as I used brush to colour instead the paint bucket tool as felt I had more freedom with it and I could be more precise with it.

I think we rushed a bit when we put all the files together and started adjusting them. I think we should have taken in consideration that the image in draw in 1st point perspective, which means we should have put the characters accordingly, but we didn't. I think if the background and the characters were made together the outcome would have looked a bit differently and probably more realistic, but the reason can also be that me and my partner didn't communicate properly when we were working on the presentation in AE. For this reason me and my partner decided to adjust it a little and then put both of them for display on the presentation page to show the difference. I made the characters a bit smaller to fit the perspective of the background and also fixed their proportion as they were a bit off. For me at least the outcome looks a bit realistic and more how we planned it to be. I still like the original as there the characters are bigger and more appealing, but looked a bit off as if the they are out of place. Whereas the new one the characters are smaller, but let the background appeal to the viewer.

I think this project was very successful as we finished it on time before the deadline. Also both me and my partner managed to follow the production schedule quite well. In addition I think that the outcome turned quite well especially the 3D side as we both felt a bit stressed about it but it turned out very well. I think that the 2D side looks very good because it includes variety of styles and colours used by both of us. Also we managed to incorporate the theme of the project to the work which I also consider as a successes.

My goals for the next project are:

  • To communicate better with my partner if I work in group again;

  • Experiment a bit more and try something new, in specific to work more on 3D;

  • To not rush and spend some time planning trough my project;

  • Write and discuss more on wix, and put more evidence on my Practical skills page.

  • Research more on the softwares I plan to use so I can have a better understanding of what are their limits and possibilities.
